nicelium at Techsylvania 2026: what facility and sustainability leaders told us about CSRD compliance, waste contamination, and automated sorting.

When it comes to local innovation, we're here for it.
Merging into the ecosystem is natural for us. It's what we do. We go where the operational teams are, and while we're at it, we help the space around them by creating clean fractions of actually recyclable material.
"Is this going to solve everything?" - maybe that crossed your mind.
Fair question. The waste chain is long. And, in all honesty, faulty.
But deciding not to act because the system feels too broken to fix isn't a mindset we can afford. We're here to change a thing. And with it, to build a ripple effect that:
That drive, to change a thing instead of just talking about it, is exactly what we saw in every conversation we had at Techsylvania, Romania's annual gathering of the most innovative solutions in the region, held every year in Cluj-Napoca.
This year's edition brought together solutions tackling safety, social impact, sustainability, and startup growth. Beyond the tech itself, what stayed with us was the people. So many of them shifting from bystander to active changer of the current state of affairs.
We deployed nicelium two ways: as a startup stand, and as a live, staff-supported disposal interface for the venue. Real waste. Real visitors. Real sorting, live.
Curious minds stopped by. Sustainability leads, facility managers, founders. Most conversations circled back to the same thing: waste management.

Sustainability representatives are overwhelmed. Not from lack of knowledge. Most companies are well aware of mandatory ESG reporting and CSRD compliance requirements. The overwhelm comes from bandwidth. Waste sits as one more line item in an already full week, and the current system offers little practical support for improving it.
And yet, the intent is real.
Companies aren't just chasing the compliance floor. Many want to surpass CSRD targets, not just meet them.
Here's the uncomfortable truth: waste never stops. We produce and consume at a scale that isn't shrinking anytime soon, wishful thinking aside.
Sorting education has come a long way. Reporting hasn't kept pace. Contamination rates globally are still, frankly, alarming. It only takes one wrong item to compromise an otherwise well-sorted fraction. Multiply that risk across every disposal point on the planet, and "hope people sort correctly" stops being a strategy.
We can't leave this to chance. Not anymore.

At Techsylvania, we got to watch people interact with nicelium without our intervention. Just the system, and the visitor.
One thing was clear: the interface is intuitive.
You drop your item. The AI sorts it. Automatically.
There's more to build. The next generation of the system arrives in 2027. But this first live deployment validated the part that matters most right now: for sustainability and facility representatives, automated waste sorting isn't a novelty. It's relief. Relief for reporting. Relief for education. Relief for recycling rates that actually hold up under scrutiny.
This is only the beginning.
Stay tuned.
nicelium™ is Romania's first AI-powered autonomous waste-sorting infrastructure, developed in Cluj-Napoca and demonstrated at events including Techsylvania 2026 and ChangeNOW Paris.
