Most recyclable material never reaches recycling due to contamination at the point of disposal. Once fractions are mixed, recovery becomes inefficient or impossible. The gap is not in processing capacity, but in how waste is sorted before it enters the system.

Most recyclable material never gets recycled. Not because collection infrastructure is absent. Because the fraction arrives at the processing facility in unrecoverable condition.
The interface is the failure point. Not the system.
The sorting decision is placed at the point of disposal. It is made by a human, in a corridor, in under three seconds, under conditions not designed for material classification. The fraction categories are visible. The decision is fast. The error rate is not exceptional. It is built into the design of every conventional disposal interface deployed at scale.
When a recyclable stream contains liquid residue, food contact material, or mixed fractions, it is downgraded or rejected at the sorting facility. The material leaves the building correctly labeled. It arrives at the processor unusable. It is reclassified. It goes to landfill. This gap does not appear in collection statistics. It appears in the landfill receipts.
The EU reports a plastic packaging recycling rate of 40.7%. The number reflects collection. It does not reflect recovery. Between the two, the contamination gap silently absorbs the difference.
Closing this gap does not require behavioral change. Awareness has been funded for decades. It has not closed the gap.
It requires removing the human decision from the critical path entirely.
When sorting is internal and automated, the fraction that leaves the building is the fraction that was intended. Cross-contamination drops below 5%. The recyclable material reaches the processor in recoverable condition. The circular economy closes where it has always broken.
The contamination gap is a precision problem. Precision is an engineering discipline.
nicelium™ sorts the material. You drop. The gap closes.
